When we were interviewed on KLTT am 670 this week the announcer was very ready to mention that people have to get to the cause of their problems rather than pop pain pills. This made me think about how much the public really is sick and tired of being sick and tired and is fed up with being anesthetized to relieve pain with no growth. We re-posted an article from the chiropractic journal on our site about the massive amount of pain pill overdoses that currently are sending thousands to the hospital each year.
Overdoses of the common household drug acetaminophen lead to more than 78,000 emergency department (ED) visits a year, and the majority of the overdoses are intentional, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Understand that in addition to the negative physical effects of drugs there is also the cultural tendency that has been created to move towards medications as an answer for everything.
“About 70% are for self-harm attempts, and 13% to 14% are kids getting into products,” said lead study author Daniel Budnitz, MD, medical officer at the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion. “The other 16% are the adolescents and adults that generally fall into two groups: the younger adults that are misusing over-the-counter products because they are trying to get better pain control and don’t understand the risks, and the older adults that are making some errors using the opioid combination products.”
Consumers take acetaminophen — the active ingredient in Tylenol — to reduce pain or fever, as a single drug in tablets, capsules or liquid. Acetaminophen combines with other drugs in a variety of over-the-counter (OTC) cold, flu, and sinus medicines including Theraflu, Triaminic and Sudafed.
Since they are OTC drugs, people normally consider them completely safe. Acetaminophen also appears in combination with an opioid – a narcotic — in prescription medicines like Vicodin (with hydrocodone) or in Percocet (with oxycodone).
ED visits related to abuse of acetaminophen products were not included in the study, which appears online and in the June issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
Young people ages 15 to 24 are at highest risk for suicide attempts or acts of self-harm involving acetaminophen, the researchers found. “Because these data are based on ED records, it is often difficult to determine exactly what motivated the patient – if they had a premeditated plan to end their life with an overdose or if the overdose was an impulsive act,” said Dr. Budnitz.
Among the others in this age group, 75% of ED visits occurred because they went above the recommended acetaminophen dosage in search of quicker or stronger relief.
Overdoses by people who think more medicine is better points to a deep knowledge gap and need for better consumer education about a familiar drug, said Henry Spiller, director of the Kentucky Regional Poison Center. He has no affiliation with the study.

I just don’t get it. If something is shown to be dangerous why recommend it over and over again. If something is a poison why would people think a little poison will help you? or a little poison is less poisonous if you take it every day in small amounts. I know there is a time and place when people don’t absolutely need medications and when it is life savings and in many ways a blessing. However, why would you do something that is dangerous as the first course of action.
Acetaminophen overdose was responsible for more than 56,000 emergency room visits and approximately 100 deaths last year. Read the full article about this here. And everyday we have people coming in taking it like candy. It is time to stop the insanity. Do you have more faith in a spoonful of medicine than the power that animates the living world.
I feel this video communicates this the best. Besides who doesn’t love a little Bon Jovi

‘HEALTH CARE’ OR ‘SICK CARE?’
The United States spends over 70 percent of its health care budget to treat people suffering from diseases like cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and mental illness. This is according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
This sounds more like “sick care” rather than “health care.” That’s why health experts are now agreeing that a massive and on-going “healthy living” campaign must be launched in every neighborhood and city in the U.S.
Sure, a person can have angioplasty to unclog fatty arteries, receive radiation to kill a tumor, and take a multitude of medications to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, but these haphazard “solutions” come with a heavy penalty that often includes uncomfortable—and sometimes dangerous—side effects and a less enjoyable, lower quality of life. What American’s need is a real solution—a lifestyle of prevention.
“We need to do a better job of making people realize that chronic conditions are preventable,” says Janet Collins, director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. “You can have an angioplasty, but it doesn’t equate to the same quality [as preventing heart disease].”
On a community level, part of the solution could be to provide preventive testing and assign a health worker to follow up with patients who tested poorly for things like blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. By educating people on how to naturally improve their health through simple diet and exercise choices, we’ll start to see a smaller amount of people suffering with chronic and often deadly diseases.
What can YOU do to prevent disease in your own body? Start by monitoring the foods you eat. Avoid trans fats and other fatty, processed foods. Everyday, eat fresh vegetables and fruits. Make time to exercise—even if it’s taking the stairs instead of the elevator, every bit of exercise counts. And empower your body to fight off disease by maintaining a healthy spine through regularly scheduled chiropractic adjustments.

LAWSUIT AGAINST FDA: MERCURY IN MEDICINE
Mercury is the second most toxic element on earth, next to plutonium, yet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows it to be widely used in the vaccines and medications you and your family may take each year. Mercury can be toxic when it is inhaled, taken orally or when placed on the skin. Its harmful effects have been scientifically linked to several diseases, including autism, learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, depression, and bipolar disorder. The reality of mercury use is alarming, yet the FDA—the government agency established to ensure the safety of Americans by weeding out all the harmful components of food products and drugs before they hit the market — could care less if we’re exposed to this life-threatening substance. Instead, they continue to allow mercury to be administered in at least 45 different over the counter drugs, including eye ointments, nasal sprays, and vaccines—including the Flu vaccine which is administered to children and pregnant women. This careless behavior is the driving force behind the Coalition for Mercury-free Drugs (CoMeD), who is now asking the U.S. federal court to force the FDA to comply with existing law and regulations by providing proof that mercury is safe for human consumption. Until mercury is proven safe, CoMeD asks that mercury-containing products be removed from the market. The law suit was filed because the FDA failed to answer issues raised in a citizen petition filed on August 24, 2004, by CoMeD representatives. By failing to provide any kind of proof that mercury testing has indeed been done, the FDA is admitting that they have not taken any action at all to test the safety or harm caused by consuming mercury. Adding fuel to the fire is a 1999 email, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, where an FDA official wrote that agency’s failure to evaluation the amount of mercury in medicine “…will raise questions about FDA being ‘asleep at the switch’ for decades by allowing a potentially hazardous compound to remain…and not forcing manufactures to exclude it from new products.” Knowledge is power and it could save your life. Get all the information on the dangers of mercury, and make a conscious effort to keep your body functioning at a high level of health. Eat smart. Receive regularly scheduled chiropractic appointments. Exercise. And keep reading!
